Adjustable bar stools may offer the convenience of a flexible seat height, but that doesn't mean that every adjustable bar stool is going to be the right size for your home bar or kitchen island. Not only does the height range vary from one adjustable stool to another, but some adjustable stools are designed to be used primarily at a counter-height or bar-height surface. Here's how to find a stool at BarStools.com with the proper seat height range for your bar or counter.
Bar height or counter height?
This is going to require some measuring, but don't worry: no math is involved. "Bar" and "counter" may sound interchangeable, but bars and counters actually have different standard surface heights. Grab a measuring tape from your sewing kit or garage and measure from the floor to the top of the surface of the counter or table where you plan to use your stool(s). Got it? That number should fall within the inches range on the right side of one of the diagrams below.

Counter-Height Stools. If your measurement is between 35 and 37 inches, then it's considered a counter-height surface. Look for adjustable counter stools whose variable height measurements cover the 23- to 28-inch range. |
Bar-Height Stools. If your measurement is between 41 and 43 inches, then it's considered a bar-height surface. You'll need an adjustable bar stool or two with variable seat heights that include the 29- to 32-inch range. |
Extra-Tall Stools. If your measurement is between 44 and 47 inches, then it's considered an extra-tall bar surface. Adjustable extra tall stools should offer a seat height range of at least 33 to 36 inches tall. |
The tricky part of shopping for adjustable counter stools or bar stools is that not every stool designated as "counter" or "bar" offers the same seating height or height range. An adjustable counter stool height might be anywhere from 22 to 30 inches or 31.5 to 35 inches. Likewise, an adjustable bar stool height could be 19 to 30 inches, 31 to 41 inches, or some range in between. It all depends on the brand and design, so take a close look at the height range a stool offers before purchasing it.
How many stools are enough?
The answer to this question can also be determined with a measuring tape. In this case, you'll need to check the length of your table, bar, or counter. The hospitality industry standard is to provide 26 to 30 inches of space from the center of one stool to another. The diagram on the right shows how 28-inch stool spacing would apply to a bar that's 84 inches long (14+28+28+14). In this instance, three stools would be sufficient.
Adjustable size, versatile style
Versatility is one of the primary benefits of buying an adjustable counter stool or bar stool. These stools can be used at different tables or counters throughout your home. To get the most out of your adjustable stools, look for a style and material that would nicely complement multiple elements of your decor.
